For centuries the USA has been a country of immigrants. Important phases have been the expansion of the territory across the Mississippi, newly formed states and annexation / purchase of the south-west from Mexico. The discovery of natural resources (oil, metals and gold) spurred economic development and the new states required an almost constant stream of mainly Eurpean settlers.
But the land of opportunities has lost its appeal. The American dream has faded and the desillusion among a broad layer of citizens is spreading. Emigration is overtaking immigration.
Democrat leaning citizens can blame the Trump administration which has been dismanteling freedom and civil rights, thereby also spurring distrust among parties. Republican leaning citizens could blame the Biden administration imposing too many rules suffocating economic development and making life difficult for the extractive industries. They may even blame their own grand old party for the witch hunt against members critcizing president Trump.
Politics may eventually pull the trigger but the unease and desillusions have been piling up before.
Escalating rents have driven the lower middle class out of their homes to trailer parks. If those are not available at short distance, closed parking lots shelter people living in their cars. One more misfortune separates them from the ever growing shanty towns along the side walks.
Home owners may be 'asset rich' but 'cash flow poor'. Property taxes are calculated on the inflated value often an order of magnitude above what the long time owner paid in the 1990's. Natural disasters have driven up home insurance costs in areas often affected. Where home insurance has become unaffordable, entire areas may become a wasteland after the next disaster hits.
Food inflation has been rampant. Combined with rising housing costs and wages not following total expenses, ever more Americans see no other way than food stamps to cover the necessities.
Good Healthcare is available only for those who can afford it. Health insurance is usually limited to persons working full time. Combining two half time jobs? Sorry, out of luck.
Crime rates are much higher in the US than in Europe. Especially homicides and gun violence is much higher. Emigrating shelters your children both from school shooting hazard and exorbiant tuition fees once they enter college.
