Which countries do Americans move to?

Top 10 Countries Where Americans Are Living in 2024

Of course there is a variety of reasons why US citizens move abroad.

The target video has been removed. Hereby the comments:

Remote workers may be 'location independent' as long as there is decent fiber internet, while others wish to move abroad because of career reasons.

Families move abroad for a safer school environment for their children and more affordable university education later on.

'Political reasons' are the prime reason for only a tiny minorty.

Retirees emphasize affordable health care, lower crime rates and a lower general cost of living. They fear not to be able to retire comfortably in the US.

Anyhow this is what the list looks like: countries are enumerated in the order (1 to 10) reflecting the downcount in the video. The estimated number of expats is given for information. Countries are not ordered according to the number of expats living there.

  1. Spain 400.000
  2. UK 200.000
  3. Australia 200.000
  4. Canada 800.000
  5. México 1.500.000
  6. Japan 60.000
  7. Italy 200.000
  8. South Korea 150.000
  9. France 150.000
  10. Germany 120.000
Neighbouring Canada and Mexico predictably are first choice destinations. Japan and South Korea are typically attractive for career opportunities and so is Germany. English speaking Australia and the UK are 'safe options' though not the most affordable ones.

France is attractive both for working abroad and for retiring to the more laid back mediterrean coast. Spain and Italy are the typical life style destinations, popular among retirees. Portugal and Greece did not make it to the list; nor are other European or Latin American nations. Nevertheless you find a significant number of bloggers enthousiast about Portugal and Greece in Europe and about Costa Rica, Ecuador and Colombia in Latin America.
