Most beautiful places in Abruzzo

Abruzzo is a much underrated region in Italy. It has mostly sandy beaches along the Adriatic with rolling hills in the immediate hinterland, dotted with vineyards, producing the famous Montepulciano de Abruzzo.

The west of Abruzzo, forming the border with Lazio is mountainous comprising the Grand Sasso, the highest peak of the Apenine mountains. About a third of Abruzzo consists of national parks. Abruzzo is commonly known to be the greenest region of Italy.

L'Aquila is the capital city of Abruzzo and also capital of the same name province. The province is landlocked and entirely in the Apenine region, but it is closest to Rome. In 2009 l'Aquila was severely damaged by an earthquake. The other provinces of Abruzzo are north to south: Teramo, Pescara and Chieti. Pescara province has but a short coastline, consisting of Montesilvano and the city of Pescara itself. The capital city of Chieti is close to Pescara, but most of the province is south of it. The coast of Chieti extends south to Vasto and San Salvo, bordering the Molise region. This partly rocky coast is the Costa dei Trabocchi.

Note: The italian wikipedia lists the population count, climate type and seismic sensitivity for all individual towns or villages. Generally speaking seismic sensitivity is high in the l'Aquila province (class 1 - alta sismicità) while it is low on or near the coast.

L'Aquila has a high seismic sensitivity (and was devastated in 2009). The whole province is earthquake prone. The cities of Chieti and Teramo have an average seismic sensitivity. Pescara and the coastal strip (Lanciano, Atri, Silvi; Giulianova, Ortona, Vasto ...) have a low one.
